NaNoWriMo Art Showcase

How’s everyone doing? Are you all OK? I know our world is currently upside down, but this too shall pass. In the meantime, I have an interesting (I think it’s interesting, anyway) blog post for you. Remember the NaNoWriMo novel that I told you about last week? Well, I’m 34% percent of the way to my goal, and I have decided to share some of the art that my best friend, who asked me to let her be known only as S.P., has done. She will be illustrating my book. And no, it’s not a manga or a picture book. I just wanted a few illustrations to help readers. So here we go!

This is a species known as an Arenan. They are primarily evil, although it’s obvious that not everyone in one group of people are bad, unless the group is ‘bad people.’ ;P Arenans are shapeshifters, able to transition between human and spider, and some are even able to find some in-between stage. They have long, pale hair, color changing blood, and long fingers. They traditionally tattoo themselves elaborately, as well. Their weapons are usually their spider forms, but they often carry concealed, short swords. They live in a huge, evil forest called Rinwood.

This is Candace, Stella’s (my main character) best friend. She is a minor character…for now…

This is a comic-style drawing of a scene from my first draft. In this scene, Stella and Candace are walking home when a girl name Coral follows them, insisting she’s seen a dragon (my world used to be inhabited by dragon riders instead of the winged Alaschar). Stella, who’s very practical, insists she’s crazy.

This is just a sketch of some magic.

This is a drawing of one of the first drafts of a character named Wolfe. He’s a runaway elf prince, socially awkward, but a great tracker and woodsman.

Another old sketch of Wolfe.

We’re going to have quite a few drawings of Skye now. Skye is Wolfe’s sister, runaway elf princess, great fighter, and friend. She’s becoming one of my favorite characters, and this is a great drawing of her fighting.

Quick character sheet of Skye, mostly fighting poses.

This is my favorite picture of Skye, and one I’d never seen before. When S.P. sent it to me, I was so shocked! But in a good way. This is a side of Skye I’d never seen before, a gentle, kind princess. Not that Skye isn’t those things, but she’s pretty sarcastic most of the tine, and kind of quiet. I think it’s very beautiful.

Skye again, this one’s a pretty simple side view.

This one’s also one of my favorites. There’s a scene in the third (I think? I don’t have this whole series planned out), where the little group Stella is part of is taken to a mountain where they have to forge their own weapons. I think this drawing is perfect for that scene.

This one has a couple poses on it, but the main focus is the full-body drawing of Skye (whose name used to be Izula) wearing the dress and hair of an elvish princess. If you want to see her character arc, just look at this drawing of her, the one above it, and the third picture of her. Interesting, no?

Last but not least, we have a character sheet featuring Stella, my MC (main character). After coming to the fantasy world as a human, she finds out she’s actually an Alaschar, and that’s what these drawings reflect.

Really hope you guys enjoyed that! Please leave a comment if you did, it encourages both me and S.P. Please give her a round of applause, because she’s such a wonderful artist! Thanks for reading!

EDIT: I apologize for the weird spaces between pictures. If anyone knows how to fix that, I would greatly appreciate if you’d share your smarts with me.
